Public benefits
Gill’s Charity (“the Trust”) intends to benefit senior citizens resident in the Borough of Carrickfergus who are in need of assistance as a result of their social and economic circumstances. In considering the benefits flowing from the purpose of benefiting senior citizens, it is submitted that the grants made by the Trust have worked to reduce
social isolation amongst older people and to assist in the provision of facilities and amenities ancillary to those which may be provided by the state. These have had positive effects on the health and well-being of the beneficiaries. Over the past year, the Trust has made a number of awards to organisations working in the Borough ranging from RNIB to Charles Shiels Alms-houses. These awards have been used to provide for senior citizens lunches, outings and the purchase of crafts, equipment and computer systems. Without the support of the Trust, it is likely that many of the beneficiaries would be negatively impacted in terms of their social inclusion, health and wellbeing. These benefits are demonstrated by way of the Trust’s grant application form and informal mechanisms of feedback following the award of grants. The Trust asks that applicants demonstrate through the objects contained in their constitutions that they are working with older people in the Borough in the organisation of facilities or amenities for older people. Applicants to the fund are expected to demonstrate the impact of a grant of monies on older people in the Borough. It is anticipated that further monitoring and evaluation of the Trust’s grants may take place in future. It is not considered that harm arises from the Trust’s activities in awarding grants to benefit older people. The services of the Trust are provided on a free of charge basis. The private benefits received by the Trustees as a consequence of any transferable governance or managerial skills are considered incidental and necessary in order to ensure that benefit is provided to the beneficiaries. There are no payments made to the trustees.
What your organisation does
Our organisation advertises annually in the local press asking organisations within the Carrickfergus boundary to apply for grants to assist with projects specifically designed to help older people After the closing date the Trustees meet to review the applications The requests are mainly for money to subsidise eg Christmas outings or dinners,
materials for craft work, repairs and maintenance to meeting halls, installation of a lift, outdoor seating etc The money which we allocate is dependant on the interest received during the year on the investment The investment fund is managed by Investec Wealth and Investment Ltd and we meet annually with the local manager for a review
