Public benefits

The purposes of Quercus Ensemble can be summarised as: to advance public knowledge and education of music (in particular classical music), to advance musicianship and associated arts in Northern Ireland. Public Benefit: The main direct benefits which flow from the purposes are: 1. Educational: The opportunity to pursue music to a higher level and

in a more serious and dedicated way amongst the beneficiaries as well as increased awareness and recognition of musical elements, such as rhythm, timbre, harmony, character and mood. 2. Artistic and Cultural: An ignited enthusiasm for music and awakened creative potential leading to an increased level and quality of performance in classical and contemporary music performance amongst young professional musicians. More broadly, understanding and appreciation, in all areas of society, of classical music, the arts and cultural activities are encouraged and enhanced. This leads to a deeper appreciation of classical music amongst audiences and the public. These benefits are can be demonstrated by a musician’s skill development or, for example, acceptance to musical study in third level education at home or abroad. The cultural benefits can be shown through increasing audience participation numbers, positive feedback and testimonials. The benefit of our open communication with audience members is demonstrated by a reciprocal openness from the audience, who recognise our commitment to taking feedback on board, directing it towards future programming and planning. We have seen an increase in volunteer numbers also, as those who gained from and enjoyed previous events are willing to help us. The organisation acknowledges that “there are ‘personal’ benefits to musicians – increased opportunities or employment prospects – but these are either directly resulting from the educational purpose or arising incidentally from the cultural aspect”. In turn, “these feed back into the cultural fabric of society and influence the next generation of talent”, contributing to a positive legacy and a more sustainable cultural environment and can only have a positive effect on appreciation of music. No harms arise from our purposes. The beneficiaries of our organisation are musicians, particularly young musicians, and members of the public.

What your organisation does

Quercus Ensemble is a charitable organisation set up to establish and develop a world class chamber ensemble resident in Northern Ireland. We seek to further public appreciation and understanding of music, arts and culture. We aim to provide a platform for young professional musicians to return to Northern Ireland to share their skills,

experience and expertise, and to inspire the next generation of young talent through vibrant and dynamic performances of classical music. We facilitate the development of specialist skills in music performance, ensemble playing, improvisation and composition through participatory workshops and courses. We further the advancement of arts and music through commissioning and staging performances of new works, and enhancing audience appreciation of contemporary music and culture. We embrace the wider community and develop new audiences for classical music through challenging the ways in which classical music concerts are programmed and presented and actively seeking audiences on the margin of society. We bring imagination and creativity to our programming and project development, and to our community and education work.
