Public benefits

The work of IA Northern Ireland provides a public benefit to anyone whose colon has been, or is about to be, removed by surgical procedure or who has an ileostomy by improving their quality of life, knowledge of their condition and their capacity to deal with it. This benefit can also extend to their loved ones and, in some cases, carers. The

actual benefits related to this, accrued through the activities of the organisation include:- • Improved health outcomes. • Improved mental, physical and emotional well being. • Reduced levels of stress and anxiety. • Improved self-care and self-help strategies to deal with the impact of surgery. • Reduced levels of isolation. • Empowerment of individuals and families to better cope with their or their loved ones’ condition. • Enhanced self confidence and sense of self worth • Opportunities to come together and share fears and anxieties and gain support from others facing similar difficulties. • Increased capacity to understand their or their loved ones’ condition. • Access to advice and information on lifestyle issues such as diet, nutrition, exercise and travel. • Increased knowledge and understanding of the range of support services available. • Access to accurate and relevant health information that is accessible and easily understood. • Increased capacity to articulate health needs to various health professionals. • Feeling supported, cared for and valued at a very vulnerable time The work of IA Northern Ireland also provides a public benefit to health professionals through its activities in providing funding for proposed research in Northern Ireland into bowel disease, colorectal surgery and related matters and disseminating information on these issues and other matters of interest to the charity. The actual benefits related to this include:- • Increased knowledge and skills for health professionals regarding bowel disease, colorectal surgery and post-surgery problems. • Improvements in treatment of bowel disease, surgical procedures and post-surgery problems. • Improvements in advice and information on lifestyle issues such as diet, nutrition, exercise and travel. • Advances in stoma care and equipment None of the above outcomes are deemed harmful. The only incidental private benefit accrued is the experience and training gained by volunteer visitors which may be of use to them in other areas of their lives or when seeking employment. IA Northern Ireland and the other, UK and Ireland wide, IA organisations, are committed to membership satisfaction. To that end, a national survey of all members (UK & Ireland) was carried out in 2009/2010 with a response rate of over 32%. The results showed that 89% of respondents rated the services provided by IA as ‘very good – excellent’. Additionally, during the past two years, a number of regional meetings have taken place which took the form of open forum and the feedback and information gathered was discussed by the national executive committee. Several issues were addressed and this ongoing process will continue throughout 2015.
