Public benefits

The Organisation is established to advance public education in the Holywood area of County Down, in the Irish language and Irish culture and heritage, including traditional music, dancing, arts, poetry, folklore and history. The beneficiaries are adults and children of all ages, genders and backgrounds in the the Holywood area of Co. Down. They

benefit through an increased knowledge of the Irish language and an appreciation of and engagement with Irish culture, music and language. These benefits in turn contribute to their sense of wellbeing. These benefits can be demonstrated by attendance numbers at our evening classes, lectures and events. They are also clear from feedback we receive from participants in our activities, telling us about how they have been inspired to learn more, to rethink their relationship with Irish culture and language and to feel part of it. There is no harm coming from our activities. There is sometimes private benefit arising from our activities when we avail of the services of a committee member as teacher or lecturer. In these cases, where there is payment involved, the committee member in question is never part of the decision making and is subject to the same scrutiny as any other potential teacher or lecturer. This benefit is incidental and necessary -born of the limiting size of the local language community.

What your organisation does

We run Irish classes for adults - for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners. We award scholarships for further study in Donegal language colleges, both for adult learners and for local secondary school students. We run public events - lectures, children's events, storytelling, musical occasions, cultural daytrips and film nights to raise

awareness of the language, to meet the needs of the existing language community locally and to grow that community on an inclusive basis. We run events for local irish-speaking families to support them.
