Public benefits

Purpose 1 The benefit which flows from this purpose is the education of young and old from all parts of the community in the dramatic and operatic arts of acting, singing and dancing, through membership of our society. Education, work experience and participation in our activities give young and old the confidence to perform, not only within the

Londonderry Musical Society but in many other events in the area bringing the arts to a wide range of the local population. We can demonstrate this by listening to the feedback from our audiences and the members of the Society, who get huge enjoyment from all facets of the Society’s activities. Young people are better educated in the arts as a result of the experience gained with the LMS and it improves their confidence, not only in their performing, but also in their general demeanour. We are not aware of any real harm flowing from this purpose. There is the possibility of disagreement over certain elements in the running of the society such as choice of show etc but this is minimal, if at all, and is far outweighed by the huge benefits that members derive from their membership. The main beneficiaries are the youth in our society who are able to gain knowledge and work experience in the arts. Their interaction with the older members is of mutual benefit. There is also considerable benefit for the general public who have the opportunity of attending high quality musicals and concerts which would not otherwise be available in the local area. There is private benefit for certain individuals outside the membership, such as the professional production team and the sound and lighting technicians. This cost is absolutely necessary to ensure a high quality of production. There is no private benefit within the membership. Purpose 2 The Society brings a very high standard of production to the General Public in the local area and enables our audiences to enjoy and appreciate the arts of acting, singing and dancing through the medium of Musical Shows and Concerts. Our audiences have the opportunity to enjoy musicals, concerts and plays which they might not otherwise see. We can demonstrate this by listening to the feedback from our audiences, who get huge enjoyment from our productions. We are not aware of any harm flowing from this purpose. The benefit is for the general public in the local area and, in addition, the members. There is private benefit for certain individuals outside the membership, such as the professional production team and the sound and lighting technicians. This cost is absolutely necessary to ensure a high quality of production. There is no private benefit within the membership. Purpose 3 A large number of Charities in the local area and beyond have benefitted from our Annual Showtoppers Concerts, which have helped to raise considerable sums of money. We estimate that over 26 years, we have helped to raise well in excess of £200,000. We can demonstrate this through the feedback from the various charities we have assisted We are not aware of any harm flowing from this purpose. The benefit is for any charity which applies to us for assistance and determined by the Management Committee. There is private benefit for certain individuals outside the membership, such as the Musical Director and the sound and lighting technicians. This cost is absolutely necessary to ensure a high quality of production. There is no private benefit within the membership.

What your organisation does

What your organisation does • LMS provides a year-round programme which covers a breadth of musical performances, involving people of all ages and backgrounds. • LMS performs in various cultural events within the city of Londonderry. This year we participated in Music City Day, entertaining audiences with a repertoire of familiar material and we

are looking forward to the Walled City Tattoo where we will be the Guest Choir, having performed at the inaugural event last year. • Each Autumn, LMS tours the province with the Britannia Concert Band, presenting Showstoppers concerts to the general public, playing to capacity audiences whilst benefiting various charities. Last year, to celebrate our 25th year, we embarked upon a new initiative by introducing a youth group to our well-established concert format. This proved such a success and we look forward to developing this. • We bring a flavour of the Christmas season to both staff and patients throughout our local hospital when we sing well-known Carols each year. • In the Spring we produce our annual musical, winning many awards over the past 52 years. This year’s production of Jekyll and Hyde was greatly acclaimed and our two leading ladies won Best Actress and Best Female Voice at the prestigious Association of Irish Musical Societies ceremony. Our outstanding shows offer both the on-stage participants and our audiences the opportunity to develop their love and artistic appreciation of musical theatre. Indeed, LMS has been a springboard for a number of our members who have gone on to enjoy a career in musical theatre, some of whom have starred in the West End.
