What your organisation does
Shared Areas is a not-for-profit community organization that operates in the heart of an area of high social deprivation in Newry. Shared Areas represents the collective input from all nine local Community Associations and is governed by a group of highly driven community leaders, with a shared vision of developing the life experiences of the
people of the area, particularly the vulnerable, the socially excluded and those ‘at-risk’. The organization will use its health and sports facilities (3G football pitch, climbing walls, fitness zone and bike hire) to generate income to support community development initiatives, and appropriate good-will causes within the voluntary sector. The purpose of this endeavor will result in: • The improvement of living standards for the vulnerable members of our society including the elderly, the disabled and the youth. • The promotion of urban regeneration • The promotion of volunteering in the community • The provision of an inclusive and positive community centre • The promotion of social investment • The development of other voluntary and charitable organizations The beneficiaries will predominantly come from within the local area of high social deprivation and will benefit through the following ways: Education – Receipt of scholarship funding towards education/course fees Poverty relief – Provision of grants towards food/emergency relief Community development – Access to sports and health facilities These public benefits have been agreed in conjunction with the serving members of the organization (all 9 Community Associations) and ratified by the directors. The organisation has an extensive support network involving educational authorities, health agencies and social services and through established community based programmes will provide access to the health facilities free of charge for local charity, the elderly and under-represented groups in order to ensure that maximum public benefit can occur.
