What your organisation does

AnNua creates new theatre works that draw on Northern Ireland's social, cultural and physical environments, while educating artists and communities to this end. We create by going out into communities and digitally gathering opinions, stories and experiences while also recording artistic input (music, art, photography, writing, puppeteering, dance

etc) and environmental sights and sounds. We invite interested folk to become actively involved. We use this material to inform scripting and also incorporate it into the performance and design. In this way we can include broad community and artistic visual and audio input, and then represent this through innovative and professional performance. We hold workshops to increase skills and we mentor through the active involvement of those who wish to learn and contribute. We have registered upward of fifty professional artists and many less experienced contributors as AnNua Associated Artists and involve these in accordance with their interests and skills. During the Derry 24 project (which ran over 2 years) we directly involved over 100 artists and dozens of community members to create a performance that reflected the cities diversity, histories, present and future. We accept ideas and input from across communities and seek to include a range of opinions and voices in our work. We deliberately produce, rehearse and hold workshops in areas identified as disadvantaged and actively seek input from communities within these. Thematically, we seek to critically engage and to represent disadvantaged groups. To date we have investigated themes including mental illness, conflict, grieve, our various histories, migrant experiences, immigrant experiences and those of refugees.
