Public benefits

The North West Football Centre is established to use football and sport as a means to address a range of social issues. The public benefit flowing from our purposes includes: Purpose 1: To promote the participation of young people in healthy recreation, particularly in Derry and surrounding areas, without reference to sex, race, creed or social

background, by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for the playing of football and other sports capable of improving health. The public benefit flowing purpose 1 includes improving levels of health of those that participate in our activities. This includes both physical health in terms of aerobic capacity as well as mental and emotional health through participation in team games, social interaction and communicating with others. We provide structured sports coaching to people that come from some of the most deprived areas in NI. Purpose 2: To advance the physical education of young people by coaching in and providing facilities for the game of football and other sports and recreational activities so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capabilities to enable them to grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society. We provide public benefit by increasing skills of participants, including fundamental movement skills such as hand eye coordination, throwing, catching, running and jumping. We engender an ethos of respect, teamwork and dedication all of which contribute to the social development of individuals that participate. These are transferable skills that can be applied in other sporting, social, educational or economic settings later in life Purpose 3: To provide and assist in providing facilities for sport, recreation or other leisure time occupation of young people who have need for such facilities by reason of their youth, poverty or social or economic circumstances or other disadvantage or in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving their conditions of life. Over 80% of participants at NWFC come from some of the most deprived areas in NI (neighbourhood renewal areas etc.) These young people are disadvantaged by poverty and we seek to use sport as an alternative to other, potentially negative or criminal pursuits, particularly for those aged 14-18. This also includes the provision of training and education that may result in employment prospects. Purpose 4: To advance community development by promoting co-operation and joint activities between sports, community, voluntary and statutory organisations. We signpost our participants to other service providers (counselling, employment providers, training agencies) to ensure they can access appropriate services. We also work in partnership with organisation from both sides of the community and across the border to deliver joint coaching and sporting activities, enabling the progression of good relations. Our activities also provide respite for parents and sometimes for carers in that young people are provided with a safe, structured and positive outlet, often up to 10 hours per week. Research has found that enhanced participation in sport can infer health, educational, social and aspirational benefits on participants. We very much accept our responsibility to to provide a wider, more strategic role than simply increasing performance or skills in sport. Additionally, we offer subsidised training and education for volunteers, and where possible offer sessional coaching employment through the likes of our schools initiatives and seasonal camps. This offers an opportunity for deprived individuals to secure income and gain vital experience to enhance employability In 2013/2014 we were able to offer part time employment to 1 individual as a community sports development officer. Derry has one of the highest unemployment rates in NI, so this helps to address a key societal issue.
