Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from this are the development and facilitation of the highest international standards of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for the benefit of all the citizens of Northern Ireland through enhanced standards of and opportunities for this type of treatment and hence improved levels of mental well-being. These benefits are

demonstrated through regular, rigorous re-accreditation processes (5 yearly approximately) by the national accrediting body the British Psychoanalytic Council, from which we have received very positive feed-back as to our training standards. We also receive regular positive feed-back from the participants in our training courses. In providing training, NIPaS training candidates will undertake supervised treatment of patients in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Rarely, unintended side effects may arise from this process, but the benefits of receiving treatment outway any potential harm. A private benefit to trustees may arise through payment of fees by the Association for the provision of training for NIPaS training candidates. Without this involvement of trustees the training programme would not be able to function. These benefits are therefore incidental and necessary to ensure the benefits are provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

NIPaS provides training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for persons with suitable experience in N. Ireland. The Association maintains the highest standards of training as recognised through our accreditation by the British Psychoanalytic Council - BPC (of which NIPaS is a member institution). It does this through a (minimum) 4 year rolling

programme which includes a combination of clinical and theoretical seminars, clinical case supervision and personal analysis. Qualification in NIPaS affords eligibility for registration with the BPC. NIPaS is also the regional professional body for psychotherapists who have trained in NIPaS or other BPC-recognised organisations, or whose qualifications have been recognised by NIPaS as equivalent to one of the levels of BPC registration. NIPaS also provides regular public meetings and seminars to promote psychoanalysis and all of its applications. It is also involved in collaborative outreach with other organisations including the Royal College of Psychiatrists and local Health and Social Care Trusts.
