Public benefits
The Direct Benefits which flow from the purpose: The establishment and maintenance of Carrickfergus Gasworks and the holding of historical exhibitions therein gives the general public the opportunity to visit a completely preserved town gasworks and also to learn about the history of the use of gas, and the development of the gas industry in
Ireland. The opportunity to visit Carrickfergus Gasworks is demonstrable on our web site and our use of printed advertising leaflets which is distributed to tourist Information Centres in N. Ireland. That this opportunity has been availed of by the public is evidenced in our annual visitor numbers and comments in our visitors’ books. No harm arises from our purpose. A private benefit to trustees arises from time to time through our programme of ongoing training in marketing, finance etc. Through this training, our trustees gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure that Carrickfergus Gasworks is effectively operated and that benefit is provided to our beneficiaries as a consequence. We also have a paid employee (not a trustee) to enable us to keep the Gasworks open to the public on a year-round basis and to assist in administrative duties connected with its effective operation. Carrickfergus Gasworks is open to everyone and admission is free.
What your organisation does
CGPS Ltd successfully acquired and restored what had been a derelict gasworks and re-opened it in 2002 as ‘Flame – Gasworks Museum of Ireland’. Since then, the gasworks has been statutorily listed as a Grade A site of special architectural/ historical significance by the Northern Ireland Environment Service. Flame is also an accredited museum
recognised by the Northern Ireland Museums Council. The NIMC has also funded an Education Pack for use by visiting schools. The Society has three directors and a management committee (Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and three ex-officio members), all of whom are elected at our AGM. Our accounts are audited by a Chartered Accountant and submitted annually to Companies House. The gasworks is open at all times of the year (in winter by appointment), and to this end we employ a permanent part-time Development Officer. Guided tours are offered to visiting groups and individuals. Besides the physical fabric of the gasworks, CGPS Ltd also maintains an extensive collection of gas-related objects and a comprehensive library of gas-themed publications, to which the public has access for research purposes. From time to time we also organise special events for members of the Society and their friends (eg talks), as well as public events open to all (e.g. European Heritage Open Day and Living History re-enactments). We also occasionally publish books and pamphlets on gas-related topics. Further details of our activities can be found on our website, www.flamegasworks.co.uk.
