Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from this purpose (a) include improved physical and mental health, a reduction in anti-social and/or risk taking behaviours associated with substance misuse, an increased knowledge, learned coping strategies and life skills maximizing the potential of the individual. These benefits are evidenced through client
feedback, monthly and annual evaluations, course certifications, annual reports and government statistics. The beneficiaries of this purpose are people living in Northern Ireland directly affected by substance misuse. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is the payment of charity staff. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure a level of professionalism be provided to our beneficiaries. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose (b) include improved knowledge and understanding of substances and misuse, supporting early detection and appropriate interventions, improved community development through partnership work with voluntary and statutory agencies to develop programmes and other initiatives promoting social inclusion and building community cohesion. These benefits are evidenced through client feedback, monthly and annual evaluations, community association reports, and government and Police Service of Northern Ireland statistics. The beneficiaries of this purpose may misunderstand the information disseminated leading to inappropriate actions, but this would be rare and it is considered that the benefit outweighs the risk. The beneficiaries of this purpose are people living in Northern Ireland who are in any way affected by substance misuse to include family members, local areas and the wider community. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is the payment of charity staff. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure a level of professionalism be provided to our beneficiaries.
What your organisation does
Delivering education and prevention services: • Personal development programmes which aim to address and challenge attitudes and behaviours – team building, self awareness, assertiveness, aggression, peer pressure, substance education/awareness and the impacts of substance misuse in relation to relationships and sexual health, emotions and social
impact. • Detached and outreach work meeting young people where they choose to congregate (some are vulnerable and at risk) to educate informally in aspects of drugs and alcohol and to engage them in diversionary activities • One to one support for young people to challenge ambivalence and elicit behaviour change. • Tailored and bespoke drug and alcohol programmes delivered to parents and young people. • Peer education and research where young people identify an issue, carry out a research study and develop a peer education project to raise awareness of the issue. Community development work targeted at areas where young people are regularly congregating in numbers engaging in alcohol and drug abuse, anti-social behaviour and petty crime. We engage with theses young people through detached and out reach work, encourage engagement in diversionary activities and work towards community involvement. Programmes are also offered to parents and adults in these areas. Within these communities we work in partnership with voluntary and statutory agencies to address the issue of substance misuse and associated problems with an overall approach of building communities. Counselling Services: • Counselling service to clients who have a history of drug/alcohol abuse to enable community integration. • Group support work as a method of relapse prevention (alcohol) • In house counselling service for clients referred by GP’s, Social Services,Community/Voluntary Groups, family and self referrals. Outreach Centre - Town Centre drop in facility used by young people and adults for a range of programmes and activities.
