Purpose 1 The public benefit which flows from this purpose includes a better quality of life and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. The benefit can be demonstrated by the documentation and testimonials from the participants experience in the water. What your organisation does
We are a pioneering charity in NI, which delivers a unique therapeutic experience to people with learning /physical disabilities. We allow people to experience Scuba Diving and to learn First Aid Courses. There is no other similar service available to those who benefit from this service. We specialize in working with people with learning
difficulties, mental/physical disabilities. We have a Specialist Diving Instructor who is qualified in diving with people with disabilities (IAHD) and a Specialist Therapist both with substantial experience working in this area. This is an excellent combination of water, sport and therapy. The people we work with suffer from a range of mental health issues, physical disabilities and learning difficulties; schizophrenia, manic depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias. Some have learning difficulties,Downs syndrome, autistic spectrum, ADHD, PTSDThey can advance their learning capacity and gain enough confidence to learn courses in Scuba, first aid and swimming. They have increased capacity to learn/interpret after a session. Acqua-psychotherapy will improve psychological well-being in the following areas: confidence, social skills, practical skills, the ability to interact, self esteem and communication skills. As each participant progresses, their self esteem increases dramatically and consequentially, their joy in life and pride within themselves develops. The therapist will talk with the support workers to decipher which pathology is present in each person and then with this knowledge work one to one with each participant and gauge which way to proceed with the therapy. It will be noted how much their confidence, social skills, energy, general well-being levels increase. For some people, even a small step is amazingly helpful to their whole life experience.
