The purpose of Portrush Community Playgroup is to enhance the development and education of children under statutory school age by encouraging parents/guardians to understand and provide for the needs of their children. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include promoting a child’s right to be strong, resilient and listened to by
creating an environment that encourages children to develop a positive self-image, which includes their heritage arising from their colour and ethnicity, their language spoken at home, their religious beliefs, culture traditions and home background. We are a Highscope setting and the Highscope Approach can challenge disadvantage and improve social inclusion and children’s lives. Portrush Community Playgroup helps children establish and sustain satisfying relationships within their families, with peers and with other adults and works with parents/carers to build their understanding of and commitment to the principles of safeguarding all our children. We work in partnership with parents to minimise barriers to learning by providing opportunities for them to learn about the pre-school curriculum. We aim to foster a two-way communication to promote parental involvement. These benefits can be demonstrated by the annual inspection carried out by the Health and Social Care Trust to ensure we meet the requirements set out in the minimum standards. The Department of Education also carry out an inspection which can be viewed by the general public. Benefits are also demonstrated by the carrying out of parent/carer questionnaires. The beneficiaries of Portrush Community Playgroup are pre-school children and their parents/carers in the Portrush area. There is no possibility of harm flowing out of the group’s purposes. There is no private benefit.
What your organisation does
Portrush Community Playgroup aims to advance the education of young children through the provision of an appropriate, safe and satisfying programme of play and activities, to meet the requirements of the Department of Education’s Curriculum. We believe ‘interaction and play are the main channels through which children learn and develop’. We
operate a High Scope approach – High Scope is an approach to learning derived from development principles. Its mission is to work as advocates for children and families through active participatory learning which will empower children and adults to develop their potential and contribute meaningfully as citizens. We believe that children learn best when they are engaged in planning, carrying out and reflecting on their experiences.
