Public benefits

The society is established for charitable purposes only, to advance public education through the promotion, encouragement, development and dissemination of knowledge of history in the Craigavon area. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: • Increased awareness and better education in matters regarding the history of Craigavon using

acknowledged experts from a wide variety of backgrounds in lectures and publications. • Access to historic buildings and places during outings and to experts in their history. These benefits are evidenced by feedback from members which informs our choices for lectures and outings, by positive feedback and support from the many users of our website including students and academics and by subscriptions to our publications from institutions and individuals. The beneficiaries of Craigavon Historical Society are primarily, but not exclusively, the residents of Craigavon. There is no harm flowing from our purpose. There is no private benefit flowing from our purposes.

What your organisation does

We host an annual historical lecture which is open to the public. We host a historical lecture programme from October to April which is primarily but not exclusively for our paid-up members. We publish a biennial historical journal and other local history publications which are sold on a not-for-profit basis. We host a web site -

www.craigavonhistoricalsociety.org.uk – which gives free access to our past publications. We endeavour to answer queries about local history received by post and email.
