Public benefits

Since it's launch in March 2014 and through delivery of a planned programme of activities Kindred Spirits has made a real difference to the lives of the people using the club. The main public benefit of the club is the opportunity for social inclusion. On average 45 people mostly all of whom are senior citizens come together to meet, chat,

participate and enjoy the company of others. It is a club which promotes cross community relations and another public benefit has been the enriching of cross community relations, both men and women. All members have had the opportunity to increase their knowledge across a range of subjects, safety and security talks, free alarms and timer switches have been issued to members, thereby demonstrating a further public benefit in terms of keeping the older generation safe and reassured to live lives in their own homes. Members have had their knowledge further enhanced in terms of entitlements to a variety of benefits and opportunities. A further public benefit is the facility and encouragement for members to become involved in exercise, dance classes, Tai Chi, circuits, bowls, table tennis and use of the community centre gym. Before coming to Kindred Spirits many members had never used or experienced gym facilities. Club members are developing and learning new skills in our craft classes, sewing, knitting and other crafts and arts including flower arranging. Importantly in terms of public benefit we have created an interest in and actual participation in volunteering. Many club members now actively volunteer to participate in the running of the club, from membership of committees, giving talks on their specialist subject, taking responsibility for the refreshments club, for setting up the club each week, for organising outings etc.. The club has also provided an opportunity for members to enjoy day trips to places of interest, again addressing isolation and providing company for such trips. It has also widened cultural experiences through trips to theatre and cinemas again for many members new opportunities. Finally a further public benefit is in educating a large group of people on health and well being issues, presentations on healthy eating and the importance of taking care of oneself mentally and physically.

What your organisation does

Kindred Spirits is a 50+ club offering a range of activities and opportunities to a group of residents in the wider Gilford area, a rural place. Each week we deliver a pre planned set of activities such as Thai Chi, Kurling, bowls, dance, exercise, Boccia and gym. We have light refreshments each week and there are a variety of board games and books

available for the members to use. We bring in presenters to give short talks on eg safety in the home, health issues, speakers from the large supermarkets, local historians etc. Primarily the club is a social opportunity to promote social inclusion and help address loneliness and to enhance cross community relations.
