Public benefits
The overall purposes of the Ulster Workhouse and Famine Trust Lisnaskea (UWFTL) fall within two of the 12 decriptions contained in the Charities Act, and is for the public benefit: The Advancement of Citizenship and Community Development The Advancement of the Arts, Culture, Heritage or Science The Direct Benefits which flow from Purpose 1)
include: The conservation and development of a historic building and local landmark, which will contribute to the cultural, heritage-related and environmental offer for the community of Lisnaskea. The promotion of volunteering and social inclusion. This Benefit will be demonstrated by the physical fact of conservation and aesthetic improvement of a building which will benefit from refurbishment, thereby improving the look of Lisnaskea town. No harm flows from this Purpose. The Direct Public Beneficiaries of this Purpose will be the local community of Lisnaskea and also tourists and visitors. There is no private benefit flowing from this Purpose. The Direct Benefits which flow from Purpose 2) include: An increased awareness of the Great Famine in Ireland and the role played by the Lisnaskea Workhouse in helping victims of the Famine. This will be achieved through the establishment of an Exhibition Room, explaing the role of the Workhouse and its links to the wider Famine Trail. This will present the building in its full historical context and will benefit not just the local community in Lisnaskea, but tourists and academics; and A direct input into the education of local schoolchildren on this aspect of local history. This Benefit will be demonstrated by the number of visitors, and by regular canvassing of residents, visitors and schools No harm flows from this purpose. The Direct Public Beneficiaries of this Purpose will be local people in Lisnaskea and the surrounding areas, tourists and, especially, schoolchildren. There is no private benefit flowing from this Purpose. The Direct Benefits which flow from Purpose 3) include: The provision of office accomodation for professional services, training rooms and social enterprises These will offer opportunities for employment for local people, especially within social enterprises This Benefit will be demonstrated by the number of businesses, traininersand social enterprises which take rental space within a restored Lisnaskea Workhouse. The Benefit will also be demonstrated by the longevity of these enterprises, and the number of people employed/trained. No harm flows from this Purpose. The Direct Public Beneficiaries of this Purpose will be local businesses and people in need of training and/or employment, and providers. There may be a small private benefit to local businesses but this benefit is necessary to the advancement of the UWFTL charity, and is incidental. The Direct Benefits which flow from Purpose 4) include: Other amenities and attractions which might include: 1. Youth Hostel 2. Creche/Cafe 3. Craft Workshops 5 Music Area 6. Gym These amenities and attrctions will provide benefits to local businesses, mothers, arts and voluntary groups, other charities, visitors and tourists. The Benefit will be demonstrated by the success of these amenities/attractions in terms of usage/footfall/income. UWFTL will get feedback from tenants, service providers/users, residents and visitors. No harm flows from this Purpose. The Direct Public Beneficiaries of this Purpose will be local residents, businesses, service providers, service users and tourists. There may be a small private benefit to the above groups, but this is necessary to further the aims of UWFTL, and is incidental.
What your organisation does
The Ulster Famine and Workhouse Trust Lisnaskea (UFWTL) was established in 2011 for the purpose of restoring and developing the old workhouse building in Lisnaskea, Co. Fermanagh, as a heritage, culture and enterprise centre. UWFTL has received overwhelming support from the local community thus far, raising suffient funds to commission a
preliminary Options Appriasal. If restored and conserved, the Lisnaskea Workhouse will become a valuable resource for the people of Lisnaskea and surrounding areas.
