Public benefits

The direct benefit that flows from this purpose a) includes an improved environment and community involvement leading to reduced social exclusion and increased morale within the area. Relief to those who are disadvantaged by poverty leading to improved well-being of the community as a whole. Upkeep and restoration of a derelict, historical building

and provision of public amenities providing a community hub for the benefit of the local area. The direct benefit that flows from purpose b) is that the community in the primary area of benefit has an improved knowledge of and involvement in local history and heritage. Another direct benefit is increased educational opportunities leading to a better informed and educated community. The direct public benefit arising from purpose c is the facilitation of adult education, recreation and other leisure-time activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said primary area of benefit. There is also the direct benefit that the local community of have access to a community centre. The benefits are demonstrated in that the Association has only been in operation for a limited time and in its early existence was principally involved in the conservation of the listed building referred to. Therefore whilst its purposes are clearly stated they are in the process of being developed. However already three organisations in the area of primary benefit use the facilities for regular meetings and it has also attracted use from the wider community. A detailed record is being maintained of the organisations using the facilities the numbers attending etc. and it is available for inspection. A community needs and audit has been carried out. This survey in addition to support for the Historical and Community Association also identified a number of initiatives to be addressed including as priorities arts and crafts instruction, fitness and health issues, walking/rambling club and IT training. Some of these initiatives will require the provision further resources for the facility and identification of funding will be a priority. No harm or private benefit flows from our purposes. The beneficiaries are the people of Salters Grange and surrounding areas and also visitors to the area.

What your organisation does

Salters Grange and District Historical Society provides an annual programme of lectures and visits and has as one of its objectives the provision of a tourist trail relating to the rich history of the area beginning with ‘The Molyneux Trail’. The Church and graveyard contains many interesting artefacts relating to the Molyneux family including the

family vault, several individual family burial plots and many fine marble memorials to family members dating back to 1797. The graveyard also contains memorials to parishioners who died in the great train disaster at Killuney in 1889. An historical leaflet has been drawn up by the Society detailing these and other information. This leaflet would allow the first stage of the development of the Molyneux Trail facilitating the reception of tourist groups and giving the opportunity to develop catering for such groups in association with other tourist initiatives such as Armagh Guided Tours who already visit the area particularly in the apple blossom season. The final element in the development of the Molyneux Trail would be to provide access to the Molyneux family vault under the west transept of the Church. The vault provides the last resting place for a number of family members and was constructed by Sir George Molyneux in 1848. The other family vault is under St Audeon’s church in Dublin. Whilst internally the vault is in good condition the access to it from outside needs urgent attention. The railings and gates need to be dismantled restored and re-instated both from a health and safety point of view and also to make the vault secure.
