Public benefits
Bryson Lagansports provides access to water sports on the River Lagan to those who would not normally have access to such activities; in particular to the riverside communities and other sections of society disadvantaged through age, disability, unemployment or ethnic origin. Bryson Lagansports also offers a range of land based activities including
abseiling, archery, orienteering, walking and cycling. The direct benefits flowing from the purpose include an enhancement in the social welfare of participants through providing relief from their regular environment, improvements in health and wellbeing through physical activity and building confidence and self esteem as well as providing access to accreditations in specified water sports. The benefits can be demonstrated through formal and informal evaluation feedback from participants in our programmes, educators/educational authorities and the recognition of our organisation’s work by local authorities. Fees for our target beneficiaries are subsidised and our fee structure is published. This allows for access to the facilities by youth/community groups, marginalised communities etc. Any potential harms are outweighed by the benefits to participants and alleviated through our safety talks, for example, our Water Safety Education Programme. There are no private benefits to any individuals connected with the organisation other than the payments of salaries to staff which is a necessary requirement in order to provide our facilities and therefore incidental to the carrying out of the purposes. The purposes of the organisation are charitable as they fall under those purposes listed in the Recreational Charities Act (NI) 1958. Bryson Lagansports provides access to water sports on the river Lagan to those who would not normally have access to such activities; in particular to the riverside communities and other sections of society disadvantaged through age, disability, unemployment or ethnic origin. The activities/services provided by Bryson Lagansports enhance the social welfare of participants through providing relief from their regular environment, improving health and wellbeing through physical activity and building confidence and self esteem.
What your organisation does
Bryson Lagansports was opened in 1995. It operates from a converted riverside warehouse which was purchased and refurbished through an EU grant and equipped for water sports through a National Lottery grant. At the time, a third floor was added to the premises to provide office accommodation which could be let to third parties to provide revenue to
support the organisation's charitable activities. The centre offers canoeing, bellboating, dragonboating, kayaking and sailing. Sessions range from "come try it" fun sessions to structured skills coaching. Land based activities are now also under development including archery, orienteering, walking and cycling. User groups include the local riverside communities, local schools, youth, young mums, single dads, older men/women, disabled people and ethnic minorities. The organisation's five year strategic plan to March 2018 outlines its mission as being: "To provide structured opportunities to participate in water sports and other outdoor activities, in particular to marginalised communities, and in this way support health and wellbeing lifestyles, personal development, employability and community cohesion." In pursuit of this it has the following strategic objectives: 1. To establish Bryson Lagansports as an organisation that provides a range of structured programmes which will address some of N.I.’s key issues including youth unemployment, community cohesion, health and wellbeing. 2. To establish Bryson Lagansports as a Centre of Excellence for the promotion of active living through water and land based activities. 3. To be operating at maximum capacity serving the whole community, whilst ensuring that priority is always given to disadvantaged groups. 4. To have significantly strengthened its influence and reach with stakeholders internally and externally. 5. To establish Bryson Lagansports as a viable social enterprise model.
