Public benefits
The Trustees believe that all our purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose 1 Relief of poverty The benefit that flows from this purpose includes alleviation of both rural and social isolation through access to accessible affordable social events. This is demonstrated through feedback from attendees who have stated
how activities such as social events which include games, quizes and information have had a beneficial impact on their health and well-being. This view is also supported by attendees’ immediate family members who transport the people to the hall. The Trustees do not see any potential harm. The benefit is for the people of the Glenshesk area in particular, but not exclusively, the elderly. The only private benefit to trustees may arise from training in good governance. These benefits are incidential and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose 2 Relief of those in need The benefit that flows from this purpose includes increased awareness and knowledge of welfare rights, advice and information; referral to relevant agencies which can assist. This is demonstrated by the partnerships we have made with support agencies in this field of work. We have had positive programme evaluations and personal feedback about improved living conditions and additional income from entitlements. The Trustees do not see any potential harm. Our activities benefit the elderly and young families and those living on low incomes in the Glenshesk area. The only private benefit is the additional knowledge gained but this benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose 3 Advancement of education The benefit that flows from this purpose includes increased skills and knowledge of the participants and the encouragement of lifelong learning for all age groups which has in some cases improved chances of employability through access to lectures and further education classes including crafts and hobbies for the benefit of those living in the Glenshesk area This is demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries and number of attendees. The Trustees do not see any potential harm. The benefit is for all ages of people living in the Glenshesk area but not exclusive to others. The only private benefit flowing from this is the gaining of additional skills which are transferable to other groups. Purpose 4 Provide facilities in the interest of social welfare The benefit that flows from this purpose includes increased numbers of volunteers in the Glenshesk area and the promotion of good citizenship and civic responsibility. This encourages respect as people are more knowledgeable and value the voluntary work in the community. This can be evidenced by the increased number of volunteering opportunities that are provided, enhanced equality among residents in the area as well as improved working and collaboration between residents and support agencies. Our increasing numbers are evidence that the people of the area believe they have a stronger voice when working together. The Trustees do not see any potential harm. The benefit is for everyone living in the Glenshesk area but not exclusive to others. The only private benefit from this purpose is the additional knowledge gained working in collaboration and in community development which can be shared with others. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.
