D. Close a charity

Close a charity

Under section 17(3) of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008, a registered charity is obliged to inform the Commission when it ceases to exist or if there is any change in its details on the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s register of charities. If you are not listed on the register of charities, then although it is not a legal obligation to notify the Commission, you should inform us immediately of any changes in your status so that our records can be kept up to date.

Has your charity closed? Charitable companies must inform Companies House of their closure, prior to notifying the Commission.

Please do not continue with this notification as a charity should only inform the Commission once it ceases to exist

Are you a company?

If your status on Companies House shows that your company has dissolved move to question QD3. If your status on Companies House does not show that your company has dissolved please do not continue with this process, as a charitable company should only inform the Commission once its status on Companies House shows that the company has dissolved.

Are you a charity trustee of the charity that you are notifying us about, a member of staff or volunteer, or someone acting on behalf of the charity, such as a solicitor or an accountant? Please note that it is the responsibility of the charity trustees, to ensure that the proposed transaction is properly notified to the Commission.
Is your charity currently listed on the register of charities?

It is the responsibility of the trustees, to ensure that the closure of the charity is properly notified to the Commission. As you have confirmed that you are not a trustee, a member of staff or volunteer, or someone acting on behalf of the charity, you do not have authority to notify the Commission of the closure of the charity. If you have any queries regarding this please contact the Commission via the following link: Contact the Commission
