The Commission's Equality scheme and action plan demonstrates our firm commitment to promoting equality and diversity across all aspects of our work.
Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (the Act) (external link) requires public authorities, in carrying out their functions, to have regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and good relations across a range of categories outlined in the Act.
Section 49A of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (as amended) also requires us to have regard to the need to promote positive attitudes towards disabled people and encourage participation by disabled people in public life.
Our Equality scheme and action plan sets out how we will work to meet these duties and responsibilities. This document and our annual progress reports to the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland are available below:
We publicly consulted on a draft of our equality scheme in the summer of 2012, which was subsequently approved by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland on 24 April 2013. Following this approval the agreed procedures have been implemented and will be reported in our annual reports.
We are also committed to screening all new and revised policies or decisions which have the potential to impact on the promotion of equality and/or good relations.
An overview of new and revised policies and the outcome of screening are available in the quarterly screening reports below. Copies of individual screening reports are available on request. You can also find below our Equality scheme five year review - summary report.
