Over 3,800 charity accounts now available on the register of charities

Almost 1,300 charities have met their 31 January 2018 annual reporting deadline – with their accounts and reports now published on the Northern Ireland register of charities for the first time.

“Annual reporting by charities is new to Northern Ireland so we understand it may be daunting, particularly for charities which have never filed accounts with a regulator before,” said Fiona Muldoon, Commission Monitoring and Compliance Manager.

“The end of January was a big milestone for us and it is encouraging to see over 80% of the 1,560 charities due to submit by that date met their deadline.

“Unfortunately, some 270 charities failed to meet the 31 January deadline and went into default, which was marked on their register of charities entry. This status on the register could be damaging to a charity’s reputation and may raise concerns amongst their supporters and funders

“It’s important those charities take action and file their annual monitoring return as soon as possible, highlighting to the public they are open and accountable.”

All registered charities must, under the law, report to the Commission annually on their finances, resources and activities. Each charity has ten months from the end of their financial year to submit the information.

Over 3,800 charity accounts and reports are available on the register of charities. This includes charities which submitted by their deadline, charities which submitted late and charities which have filed for more than one financial year

“Annual reporting isn’t just a legal duty, but is an important way of keeping the public up-to-date with the work of charities, many of which receive a great deal of public support and funding,” added Fiona.

“It’s also a key part of our overall regulatory and monitoring work, ensuring charities are operating good governance practices and meeting their legal duties.

“We recently opened our first statutory inquiry into a charity in default*, so there’s always the risk that charities which fail to submit their annual return could come under our enquiries spotlight,” Fiona concluded.

Notes to editors

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is the independent regulator of charities in Northern Ireland, established under the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

Once a charity is registered by the Commission, the trustees are required, under the law, to report annually to the Commission on the charity’s finances, resources and activities.

Through the annual reporting programme registered charities will be required to complete and submit an online annual monitoring return form, attaching the charity’s accounts, trustees’ annual report and a report from an independent examiner/auditor, as applicable.
The Commission makes copies of accounts and reports submitted by registered charities publicly available on each charity’s register entry.

*The Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into 100 Help the Homeless (NIC100203). The charity is over 500 days in default, with the Commission also looking into the governance, administration and financial control of the charity.
