Commission to reflect on the future of charity regulation at annual public meeting
Northern Ireland’s Charity Commissioners will reflect on the successes and challenges of implementing charity regulation, as well as plans for future development, at the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s annual public meeting 2018.
Members of the public are invited to attend this event, which will be held on Monday 15 October 2018, from 9.10am to noon, at the Linen Suite, Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to find out more about the work of the Commission, as well as to ask questions and, as part of a round table discussion, share your views on the Commission’s next three-year strategic plan.
Chief Charity Commissioner, Tom McGrath, commented: “The past few years have been a busy time for the Commission, with over 6,000 charities now registered and over 4,200 charity accounts and reports published on the register of charities.
“However, while we are proud of the progress so far, we are aware that it will be challenging to deliver all of our future priorities within available resources.
“The annual public meeting is an opportunity to find out more about that work - our successes, our challenges and our plans for the future – as well as to have your say on the Commission’s strategic development.”
The Commission is delighted to announce that well-known PR practitioner and media commentator, Nick Garbutt, will be the guest lecturer at the 2018 public meeting.
Nick is a former Irish News editor, deputy editor of the Belfast Telegraph and head of corporate affairs, Europe for National Australia Bank. He is also editor of the policy magazine Scope and is heavily involved in the voluntary sector. He is a past chair of Start360 and is currently a trustee of Victoria Housing Estates and the Open House Festival.
As a guest speaker and using his extensive PR experience, Nick’s talk will focus on the theme of protecting your charity's reputation, with a talk entitled When Things Go Wrong.

Notes to editors
The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is the independent regulator of charities in Northern Ireland, established under the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.
A non-departmental public body, the Commission is sponsored by the Department for Communities and has a number of legal functions where it uses powers similar to those of the High Court.
