Public benefits

Charitable Purpose: The advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation, or the promotion of religious or racial harmony or equality and diversity. To provide opportunities for the Japanese community living in the North West and surrounding areas to make their customs and traditions part of the local cultural calendar. To

increase public knowledge and understanding of the Japanese community in Northern Ireland. To address the barriers existing in Northern Ireland in particular in relation to music and festivals by creating a new shared space where both traditions of this historically divided country can feel safe and included. What benefit flows from this purpose? The direct benefits which flow from purpose 3 include creating a safe and welcoming space for the Japanese community to celebrate their traditions. This will create greater community cohesion between the Japanese community and local communities. Direct benefits also include the promotion of diversity and equality in Northern Ireland. Can you demonstrate this? Greater Community cohesion will be demonstrated through the better understanding of Japanese culture and traditions that will exist after the outreach programme as demonstrated by performances and exhibitions. The very existence of the outreach programme and the festival will create many opportunities for local people to engage in a positive way with diversity. We will measure outcomes through the use of questionnaires and attendance resisters before, during and after projects/Festivals. Is there any harm or possibility of harm? There is no possibility of harm from this purpose. Who is the benefit for? The Japanese community and the wider public. Is there any private benefit? There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose. The advancement of the arts, culture, heritage or science. To establish an annual festival to celebrate and promote Japanese music and arts as part of our local cultural calendar. To promote the development of Japanese arts and culture within the city and the county as a legacy to the work initiated during City of Culture 2013. What benefit flows from this purpose? The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include providing a showcase opportunity and creating an audience for Japanese music and arts in Northern Ireland. Can you demonstrate this? These benefits will be evidenced through monitoring attendance at the festival and getting feedback from participants and audience members. Is there any harm or possibility of harm? The purpose of our charity is to run an evening festival and may lead to the following harm. There could be a risk of accident or illness during the festival. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits through the fact that the festival will be stewarded professionally, there will be first aid practitioners on site and all volunteers will be properly trained. A risk assessment will also be completed as part of the Event Management Plan which will be submitted to the Derry City Council Safety Advisory Group. Who is the benefit for? The charity’s beneficiaries are the Japanese community in the North and North West, the wider public, practitioners of Japanese art forms. Is there any private benefit? There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose.

What your organisation does

We work to promote Japanese culture and traditions here in the North. We especially work to use taiko drumming as a medium for bringing cultures and traditions together. We participate in local parades such as the Spring Carnival and Halloween by working with local youth dance groups. We run outreach programmes in taiko drumming, manga art, dance,

Japanese language and song. We take our outreach programmes to a variety of school, community and youth groups across the North West and into rural areas. We organise and develop an annual festival to showcase the work that is created by these outreach programmes. This creates a wider audience for our work and increases awareness of Japanese culture and heritage. We also work closely with local Japanese people to encourage inter-racial and inter-cultural participation.
