Share your views on new equality guidance
Have your say on new, draft equality guidance for Northern Ireland’s charities before it’s too late, is the latest message from the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.
The Commission, Northern Ireland’s charity regulator, is running a public consultation on its draft guidance, which aims to support charities in understanding the complexities of equality legislation as it affects them.
However, with the consultation due to close at 5pm on Tuesday 28 April 2015, time is running out for interested parties and individuals to share their views on the guidance.
Frances McCandless, Chief Executive of the Commission, commented: “Our equality guidance is aimed at helping charity trustees to understand the often complex intersection between charity and equality law, as it relates to them.
“I would encourage anyone who is interested in charities, or equality issues as related to charities, to read the draft guidance and let us know what they think, so we can produce final guidance which meets their needs.”
There are a number of ways participants can share their views on the guidance, which is available to download here.
- share their views by answering a series of questions and add their comments via an online questionnaire
- download an MS Word copy of the questionnaire here, complete and return it to Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, 257 Lough Road, Lurgan, Northern Ireland, BT66 6NQ or email@example.com.
Aoife Morrison, the Commission’s Policy and Research Manager added: “While our public consultation won’t impact on equality legislation itself, it will support charity trustees’ understanding of the law and signpost to relevant support.
“That’s why it is so important that anyone interested in charities, from trustees through to volunteers and service users, provide feedback and help us ensure the guidance is clear and accessible.”
The Commission’s draft equality guidance was developed with the assistance of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.
It is available as a downloadable PDF from the Commission’s website and will be of particular interest to charity trustees, charity support organisations, charity beneficiaries, service users and members of the public.

Notes to editors
The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is the regulator of charities in Northern Ireland.
In keeping with its function as charity regulator, the Commission has produced a wide range of guidance to assist and support charities in meeting their requirements under charity law. This includes guidance on registering as a charity in Northern Ireland, the public benefit requirement and annual reporting requirements.
The Commission’s consultation on its draft Equality guidance for charities in Northern Ireland will close at 5pm on Tuesday 28 April 2015.
Following this the Commission will collate and analyse the responses it has received, publishing a consultation report and a final version of the guidance later in 2015.
