It is compulsory for all charities operating in Northern Ireland to apply for charity registration. If you are a charity in Northern Ireland and have not yet heard from the Commission, you should prepare for registration now by:
1. Checking the registration list below to see if your organisation is included.
2. Following the 'Next steps' outlined further down this page, as appropriate to your charity.

The Commission will call forward organisations from the registration list in set tranches over coming years, ensuring that registration can be managed in a fair and efficient manner.
You are on the list - you should now check the Commisison's tranche list and, if it appears that your organisation has already been called forward but you have not heard from the Commission within a week of the date the tranche was called forward, please contact us as soon as possible to ensure the contact details held by the Commission for your organisation are up to date.
You are on the list but contact details are missing – please update the Commission by emailing your organisation’s name and your contact details via contact us.
You are not on the list – please complete the online Expression of intent form (external link) to provide your details to the Commission, enabling you to be called forward to apply for charity registration.
If you think there are special circumstances which will apply to your registration - for example you think you are one of a number of similar organisations that could be assessed as a grouped registration or you need to use a particular power set out in the Charities Act for which registration is a condition. Please complete the online Expression of intent form (external link), outlining any special circumstances which you think apply in your case.
If you would like to start a new charity – please complete the online Expression of intent form to provide your details to the Commission, enabling you to be called forward to apply for charity registration. You will need to successfully register as a charity with the Commission if you wish to apply to HMRC for charitable tax exemptions.
You will find more information and detailed guidance on the registration process in the Commission’s Registering as a charity in Northern Ireland: guidance.
