Once registration begins our user-friendly online application system will guide you through the process of applying to register. You will be able to save your form at any time and come back to it another time if you wish.
What do I need before I start?
Please make sure you've read our relevant guidance before starting your application. This will help you decide whether setting up a new charity is the right thing to do, and whether or not you need to register.
You should then read our other guidance in this section which explains some of the other things you'll need to think about before applying.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get a registration number as soon as I submit an application?
No - this is an online application system, not an online registration system. You will be given a unique Application Reference Number which you should quote when giving any additional documentation or information. This is NOT a registered charity number and should not be used for any other purpose other than communication with us about your application. Applications received need to be considered before a decision is made on registration. If we decide to register you as a charity we will then issue you with your charity registration number, which you must use publically to demonstrate your charitable status.
How long will it take to register a charity?
If you have used an approved governing document without changing it, and there is no significant private benefit to any trustee or related party, we will normally be able to approve your application more quickly. Currently however, we do not yet know what processing times will be.
Do I have to apply to register a new charity online?
It is our preference that you use the online application system. If you do not have access to a computer you can still contact us to request a paper application pack. However, applications submitted in this way may take significantly longer to process.
